Year 12 Geographers Explore North Devon on Fieldwork Weekend

Year 12 Geographers enjoy a hands-on fieldwork weekend in North Devon, exploring diverse landscapes and gathering data for their NEA projects.

From Friday to Sunday, Leweston’s Year 12 Geographers embarked on an enriching fieldtrip to Skern Lodge in Appledore, North Devon, as part of their preparation for the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). The weekend provided a valuable opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-world environments through hands-on experience.

Across the three days, students took part in a wide variety of human and physical geography fieldwork techniques in locations including Appledore, Bideford, Westward Ho!, and Ford Woods. Activities ranged from measuring the iconic Pebble Ridge, conducting environmental quality surveys, and administering questionnaires, to measuring carbon content in trees as part of a physical geography investigation.

The trip wasn’t all work, however — there was plenty of time to take in the stunning North Devon scenery, enjoy a well-earned ice cream, and even dive into a lively and competitive game of water polo!

The students returned full of ideas and data to inspire their individual NEA projects, as well as a renewed appreciation for the diverse landscapes and communities they explored.
