Prep 1 had an amazing adventure as Eco Explorers during their visit to Carymoor Environmental Centre. Even the sun decided to join in the fun!
They discovered how Carymoor was once a landfill site and even walked over the buried rubbish. The children were thrilled to explore the waste tunnel, examining discarded items and discussing their materials and potential alternative uses.
The compost site was intriguing, and they learned why it was steaming—it can reach up to 70 degrees inside the heaps! They then strolled through the nature reserve, marvelling at how a landfill can be transformed into a habitat for wildlife. They spotted numerous animal tracks, a skeleton, and even a great crested newt!
Everyone eagerly anticipated their picnic lunch, leaving no crumbs behind. Afterward, they participated in a recycling relay and crafted their fantastic dinosaur pots, which they filled with Carymoor compost and cress seeds.
Finally, Prep 1 explored various objects made from repurposed materials that would have otherwise been discarded, such as carrier bag chickens, tyre sandals, and juice carton bags. They had a wonderful time and expressed their desire to return the next day!
