Leweston Organ Recital with Geoffrey Morgan

This term we were privileged to hear the exceptional talent of Mr Geoffrey Morgan, whose career has been remarkable. His musical journey has taken him from London to Yale University, where he was Professor of Organ Studies, before returning to the UK and to Westminster Abbey, where he was the assistant organist under the legendary director of music, Simon Preston. He spent a few years at Guildford Cathedral, before taking up the post of organist of Christchurch Priory, where he is now their Organist Emeritus.

Mr Morgan’s recital included Bach’s fiendishly difficult ‘Jig’ fugue and his very moving ‘Arioso’. He then gave us Frank Bridge’s beautiful ‘Adagio’ and an appropriately joyful piece entitled ‘Maytime Melody’ by Alfred Hollins. His pièce de resistance was a truly dazzling performance of Théodore Dubois’ ‘Fiat Lux’, which left the audience spellbound and inspired me to learn it!

The organ in our chapel is not particularly large, but with its two manuals (keyboards), full pedalboard and comprehensive range of stops, it is a very versatile instrument. In the hands (and feet!) of someone as experienced and capable as Mr Morgan the audience was able to hear the full extent of its capabilities and to enjoy a truly memorable occasion.
