Prep 4 pupils have begun their Anglo‑Saxons topic with a rich programme of learning -combining historical enquiry, creative homework projects and hands‑on exploration of artefacts loaned by Sherborne Museum.
Prep 4 pupils have made an exciting and creative start to their new history topic on the Anglo‑Saxons, exploring life in early Britain through hands‑on learning, imagination and historical enquiry.
The topic began at the start of January with lessons exploring who the Anglo‑Saxons were, learning about the main tribes, where they came from and the areas of Britain in which they settled. To deepen their understanding, pupils created their own Anglo‑Saxon profile pages, imagining themselves as invaders from one of the tribes. Each profile included an authentic‑sounding Anglo‑Saxon name and a fun selfie‑style illustration, helping pupils engage creatively with the period.
As learning continued, pupils were set an Anglo‑Saxon homework project, and the results were truly impressive. The children produced a wide variety of thoughtful and imaginative creations and loved explaining how they had made them and what they had learned along the way. In recognition of their creativity and effort, all pupils received well‑deserved Leweston Learner creative stickers. Many of their wonderful projects are now on display in reception for the whole school community to admire - with the exception of several edible creations, which were enjoyed very quickly!
A special mention goes to Jacob, whose beautiful Anglo‑Saxon recipe book and delicious oat and honey cakes stood out for their detail, effort and creativity. Jacob’s hard work was a joy to see and fully deserving of his Leweston Learner creative sticker. His recipe book is now proudly on display in reception.
On 23 January, the topic was brought vividly to life when pupils explored an Anglo‑Saxons artefact box, kindly loaned by Sherborne Museum. Each child took turns selecting an item from the box before discussing what it may have been used for and what materials it might have been made from. Some artefacts proved trickier than others, but pupils rose to the challenge with enthusiasm and curiosity, earning high praise as excellent history detectives.
Thank you to parents for the wonderful support provided at home. It has been a fantastic start to this topic, and we look forward to seeing the pupils continue to deepen their understanding of Anglo‑Saxon life.
