Peter Kammerling shared his family's Holocaust survival story, highlighting the profound impact of historical events at Leweston's lecture.
We were delighted to welcome Peter Kammerling for our Leweston Lecture. Peter’s parents both came to England from Austria on the Kindertransport. His father, Walter Kammerling devoted much of his life to Holocaust Education, earning the British Empire Medal for his efforts. Peter speculates that his father might have given a talk at Leweston many years ago! Tragically, Walter’s parents and older sister died at Auschwitz. While his mother’s parents managed to escape to England, most of her remaining relatives were victims of the Holocaust.
Peter shared with students, staff, and the broader community a deeply personal account of how his father's separation from his family impacted him, along with a testimony from his mother about the Anschluss's effect on her and her family. The presentation placed the events leading to the Holocaust within a historical framework.
