Leweston Prep Pupils take on the Dorset Primary School Games Sailing Regatta

On Friday, 7 June, seven keen young Leweston Prep sailors travelled to Poole to participate in the 'Dorset Primary School Games Sailing Regatta' that was held at Rockley's Watersports' Poole Park location; a venue that the pupils were very familiar with.

This year, in addition to successfully completing their 'Start Racing' RYA Sailing Certificate, these seven more experienced sailors were given the chance to race, in single-handed dinghies, against other primary aged children across a series of morning fleet races that counted towards seeding places in the afternoon races. Our Leweston sailors eagerly took up the challenge during the morning races, despite strengthening wind conditions. They placed in the upper half of the afternoon seeded races and showed true grit and determination in each of their final races, beating several other competitors in each race and overcoming currents, capsizes and the odd 'racing collision' with other boats in the process.

Our school team finished the regatta with a combined points score that placed them joint third out of the twelve competing schools which was a super achievement on the day. A special mention goes to Gabriel B and Lucia G for qualifying for the 'Grand Final' medals race within the Gold Fleet which proved to be a very exciting final culmination to the day's racing. Gabriel finished the day 6th out of 30 sailors in the Gold Fleet and Lucia finished 7th. Well done to all the pupils that participated in the Regatta (Oliver B, Seb C-E, Toby D, Tilly W, Mimi L, Lucia G, Gabriel B) and thank you to all the parents who also supported the team so admirably on the day.
