Last December the Lord’s Larder in Yeovil were able to give out 300 food parcels, which went to help 851 people and families within Somerset and Dorset. Under the current circumstances and with the increase of people being shut in or feeling lonely, this year they are hoping to donate even more Christmas parcels to allow people and families to enjoy the festive period as much as possible.
They put together a reverse advent calendar throughout November to try and create a fun way to donate, with a list of items to donate on each day throughout the month.
With thanks to our Nursery children and their families we were able to donate an incredible amount to the food bank. At the end of November Transition 2 Class visited the Lord's Larder to deliver the donations, and it was such a brilliant learning opportunity and experience for all of the children. Matt kindly took in our donations and then showed the children around the larder. Transition 2 were very interested to find out new facts, including that Yeovil is the oldest food bank in the country (running for 32 years) and last year they helped over 10,000 families and people.
Transition 2 looked at the various parcel sizes packed for individuals and families, and then worked together to find the food items and pack a food parcel that will help someone less fortunate. The children understood that these are delivered to others that may not have any food available to them and are feeling hungry.
After their visit, the children had a lovely time playing outdoors at Nine Springs and enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate treat.
