On March 12th, Leweston School proudly hosted the 2026 International Public Speaking Competition, welcoming students from across Dorset to celebrate confidence, curiosity and the power of communication.
This year we extended invitations to several schools to broaden the competition and encourage more Prep School participation. In total, three schools joined us, creating a fantastic atmosphere of support, challenge and collaboration.
The speeches covered an impressive range of topics, from sustaining life on Mars, to whether The Simpsons can really predict the future, and even the ever-controversial question: should pineapple be on pizza? Some students enhanced their talks with presentations, while all demonstrated careful preparation, creativity and courage.
What makes this event particularly special is that every speaker delivered their speech in English as a non-native language. Some students have only been studying English for a short time, while others have spent longer in English-speaking schools. Standing up to speak confidently in another language requires determination, resilience and real passion for learning.
Events like this are Leweston Hosts Inspiring 2026 International Public Speaking Competition important because they nurture students’ curiosity, confidence and willingness to take risks with language. By supporting opportunities like public speaking, we encourage young people to develop their voices, share their ideas and engage with the world beyond the classroom.
Our judges were impressed not only by the quality of the speeches but also by the way students handled questions from the audience and presented themselves with professionalism and poise.
