Leweston expands Early Years Provision with new Pre-School

Leweston School is delighted to announce some exciting changes for children in its Nursery and Reception class.

In September 2025 the school will launch a new Early Years Unit which focuses attention on the oldest children at Leweston Nursery and those in the Reception at Leweston Prep. The children will move into adjacent, refurbished classrooms both with direct access to the outdoors.

For Pre-School children the move will provide more integration with the Reception class, better preparing them for transition to ‘big school’.  They can work on more focused activities without being disturbed by the younger children in nursery and have the opportunity to play alongside, and learn from, their older peers. The closer proximity to the Prep School also means that the children will be able to benefit from some of the additional facilities such as the tennis courts and riding academy.

The Reception class will benefit from a new classroom with its own garden. This will enable outdoor activities to run throughout the day without any disturbance from the other Pre-Prep classes. Rather than being put back to being the youngest in the school, the Reception class will be able to continue to develop their maturity and confidence with younger counterparts nearby. They will also benefit from the stronger link with Nursery and the larger number of specialist early years practitioners operating in the unit will mean an even higher number of outstanding activities on offer for our youngest Prep School pupils, and our oldest Nursery pupils – combining the benefits for both.

Leading the Early Years Unit will be Miss Lauren Blundell who is joining Leweston as Head of Early Years. Mrs Blundell is a passionate and experienced Early Years educator who has worked in both Nursery and Reception settings. She has an in-depth understanding of the EYFS curriculum and excels in creating dynamic, play-based learning environments that foster holistic development. Mrs Blundell also has a Masters in Theatre for Young Audiences and her knowledge and experience in music, theatre and drama enriches her teaching.

As part of the launch the school will be hosting a series of ‘Leweston Lectures: Early Years Edition’ offering parents a range of seminar sessions on issues such as successful sleep and food and nutrition for under 5s. There is also a new timetable of parent and toddler groups including Pony Sessions on Thursdays, Forest School on Tuesdays and Aquatots on Wednesdays.
