A Space Adventure for Prep 1

There is nothing quite like seeing children arrive at school excited to discover what the day has in store. For Prep 1, their recent Wow Day brought a whole universe of opportunities to explore, with a space theme inspiring a day full of curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning.

The children arrived dressed as little astronauts and explorers, ready for their first mission. After Library time, they headed outside for Gardening, where they planted their very own astronaut cress heads. As they worked, they recapped the journey of a seed, thinking about what plants need to grow. Now comes the exciting part: waiting to see whether their cress will sprout!

In Cookery, the children continued their space adventure by making rock cakes. There was plenty of enthusiasm for tasting their creations at break time, although some very generously promised to save one to take home and share.

The morning continued with a Science investigation into cloud dough, made by mixing cornflour and conditioner. The children explored its unusual properties, discovering how it could feel solid in their hands but almost liquid when stretched. It was a wonderful opportunity to encourage them to ask questions, make observations and explore what happens when we experiment with different materials.

After lunch, the children enjoyed Music and Art sessions before heading outside for an alien treasure hunt. By the end of the day, they had travelled far beyond the classroom – growing, baking, investigating, creating and exploring along the way.

Days like this capture something special about life in Prep. Learning is not confined to a desk or a single subject; it can happen in the garden, the kitchen, the science room or outside on an adventure. Most importantly, children have the space to follow their curiosity, try something new and discover the joy of finding things out for themselves.

For Prep 1, it was quite literally a new adventure every day – and this one was out of this world. 🚀
