This spotlight features our Careers Advisor, Mrs Susan Hutton.

What inspired you to work in your field?

In my previous employment as Head of Sixth Form, the careers aspect of the job bought me the most satisfaction. To be able to focus solely on careers is enjoyable and rewarding. The job is diverse, as I still have the opportunity to work with students in a classroom environment but can also offer individualised support higher up the school to help students make important decisions about their future, as well as carrying out careers sessions with younger students, including those in Prep 5 and 6. I love seeing students achieve their dreams and ambitions.

We would love to know, what interesting things you have done, in relation to your work, in and out of School?

I have a range of experience which helps me to provide relevant advice. I worked for Barclays Bank, IBM, Rank Xerox and Bass before taking a part-time course to teach in Further Education.
I worked at Strode College before moving to the Park School to initially teach Business A Level, eventually taking the position of Head of Sixth Form.

What is your passion within your work?

Helping students to realise that they can have a successful career regardless of exam results. If they are effective communicators, and creative problem-solvers with strong teamwork skills they will excel in their employment.

If you had to convince a student to study your subject, what would you say to them?

While this is not applicable to me now, I still think that Business is the best subject as it is broad, interesting and valuable regardless of final career destination. Economics is a great subject because it relates to many news stories and leads to really well paid jobs!

What is your ideal classroom environment?

Neat and tidy with smart display boards containing useful posters.

What is one fun fact about you that your students might not know?

I worked as a teacher of Economics and Business for 20 years without being a qualified teacher!
