Leweston Prep Buddy Programme: The Power of Peer Mentoring

Discover the transformative impact of peer to peer mentoring at Leweston Prep, where Prep 6 students guide and support their Pre-Prep peers, fostering bonds and enhancing academic and personal growth.

Leweston Prep Peer Mentor System
What is the Prep Buddies Programme and how does it work?

The programme pairs Prep 6 students with Pre-Prep children and new starters, allowing them to spend time together on a weekly basis. Prep 6 pupils act as mentors, guiding their buddies with their studies and helping them improve their reading skills. The Buddy Programme focuses on reading activities and academic guidance but can develop into so much more.

Why Peer Mentoring Matters?

At Leweston, pupils are encouraged to support each other, with the older pupils playing an important part in the care of the younger ones as part of our Buddies Programme. Peer mentoring is seen as a crucial aspect of a pupil's educational journey. It provides the opportunity for older students to share their knowledge and experience, as well as helping to bridge the gap between different age groups and encourage a sense of community within the school.

Benefits for Mentors and Mentees

The Prep Buddies Programme offers numerous benefits. For Prep 6, it provides an opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain a sense of responsibility, and improve their own understanding of the material they are teaching.  Our Buddies learn how to effectively communicate, empathise, and problem-solve.

On the other side, the Pre-Prep benefit from the guidance and support of their mentors. They receive individualised attention, gain confidence in their abilities, and develop important study and reading skills. The relationship also promotes personal growth, as both mentors and mentees learn from each other and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. The programme fosters strong relationships across the ages, which can lead to long-lasting friendships and support networks. One of our Buddies said that they like 'having a special connection with the younger children, making friends and guiding them through the first stages of being at school.'

Peer mentoring can also positively impact academic performance. Mentors can assist their peers in understanding difficult concepts, provide study tips, and help with homework. This additional support can boost confidence and motivation, leading to improved academic outcomes, but the benefits we see from our Buddy Programme extend way beyond academic success and contribute to the holistic development of both mentors and mentees.
