Benefits of Drama for young children

Every child at Leweston Prep, from Reception to Prep 6, has the opportunity to star on stage. From a young age we introduce drama in the form of imaginative and pretend role-play, music and dance fostering a range of important skills.
Movement and Coordination

Young children love to dance. By blending movement and music they learn to enjoy music and enjoy themselves. This also provides many benefits to the social, mental and physical development of children. They learn not only to coordinate themselves but how to interact with others including spatial awareness and taking turns.

Self-Expression

Role-play helps children to express themselves freely and to express emotions they might be feeling, in a safe and fun environment. It encourages children to express themselves verbally and non-verbally as they like to play-act scenarios about things they know.

Language and Memory Skills

Drama can have a positive impact on a child’s language and memory skills, whether they’re learning their line in a play or remembering where they need to stand on stage.  Every year our nursery and Pre-Prep collaborate in a festive production for their parents and families. The children enjoy singing carols, wearing their costumes and being on stage with their friends. Learning the songs or speaking like a particular character helps to develop pronunciation and diction.

Confidence and Creativity

Drama at an early age can help nurture a talent for singing, dance or music and sow the seeds for a life-long hobby or past time which can bring great joy and confidence. Performing in front of peers or an audience helps boost self-assurance and public speaking skills.

Cultural and Historical Awareness

Drama provides opportunities for children to explore different cultures, historical periods, and social issues through role-play and storytelling. This helps broaden their understanding of the world around them and fosters appreciation for diversity. It fits perfectly into Leweston's topic based curriculum.

Collaboration and Teamwork

Drama often involves working collaboratively with others to create scenes or performances. Through cooperation and compromise, children learn valuable teamwork skills such as listening, cooperation, and negotiation.
