Written by Rachel Milestone, Director of Music | Sep 18, 2025 10:58:19 AM

Last Friday, members of Leweston’s Senior choir, Schola Cantorum, took part in an exceptional choral workshop and concert with the Gents of St John’s (Choral and Organ Scholars from the world-renowned Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge). Held at Cheap Street Church in Sherborne, the event was a celebration of choral excellence, bringing together two exceptional ensembles for an inspiring day of music-making, learning, and a memorable joint performance in front of parents and guests.

Throughout the afternoon, Schola Cantorum engaged with a valuable choral workshop led by the Gents of St John’s. The collaboration culminated in a stunning joint rendition of Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi Caritas in a wonderful evening concert, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. We extend our sincere thanks to the Gents for their generosity, professionalism, and musical inspiration.

Events like these reflect Leweston’s commitment to academic and artistic excellence, offering our students meaningful opportunities to grow, perform, and connect through music. Please see the video below, taken during rehearsals, to hear Schola Cantorum perform:

Schola Cantorum

Schola Cantorum is Leweston’s prestigious Senior choir, open to pupils in Year 9 and above through audition. The choir plays a central role in the school’s musical life, singing at weekly Mass as well as performing at festivals, concerts, weddings, and services nationally and internationally. Participation in Schola offers students high-level musical training, performance experience, and the chance to collaborate with leading musicians.

The Gents of St Johns

The Gents of St John’s are celebrated for their versatility and rich repertoire, which spans over 600 years of music, from early renaissance works to contemporary close-harmony arrangements. As members of the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, they perform at major venues worldwide including the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House, as well as leading workshops across the UK and abroad.

Cheap Street Church

Cheap Street Church is a beautifully maintained joint Methodist and United Reformed congregation nestled in the heart of Sherborne. Following a major refurbishment in 2002/3, the church features modernised lighting, heating, and seating, creating a warm and accessible space for worship and community gatherings. Its welcoming atmosphere and excellent acoustics made it a perfect setting for this inspiring musical collaboration between Schola Cantorum and the Gents of St John’s.
