Leweston Prep was transported back to the 1940s this week as pupils in Prep 5 took part in an immersive World War Two-themed WOW Day, bringing history vividly to life through hands-on learning and creative activities.
The day saw pupils dress up as wartime evacuees, arriving at school in wonderfully authentic outfits complete with name labels and suitcases. The atmosphere was set for a day of discovery as pupils stepped into the shoes of children from the Home Front.
Throughout the day, pupils explored the realities of life during wartime Britain. They learned about rationing and the challenges families faced in feeding themselves with limited supplies. One of the highlights was baking carrot biscuits using a wartime recipe – a clever way of incorporating available ingredients into tasty treats, just as families would have done during the war.
Creativity was on full display as students designed and built detailed Anderson shelters. These miniature air-raid shelters were crafted with remarkable attention to detail, featuring imaginative additions such as washing lines, ponds, vegetable patches, and winding pathways – giving a vivid sense of the resourcefulness and resilience of those who lived through the Blitz.
The day also included a rare opportunity to listen to an original gramophone, kindly brought in by a pupil. Prep 5 also examined original wartime newspapers, offering a fascinating window into the past and sparking conversations about how news was shared during the war.
The WW2 WOW Day was a memorable and enriching experience, combining historical learning with creativity and fun.
