Leweston students were thrilled to take part in an exclusive STEM morning at the Leonardo Helicopters facility this week. This was a unique opportunity that has never been offered to a school before. We were delighted to be invited, and the experience proved both inspiring and highly informative for our aspiring engineers and scientists.

During the visit, students explored Leonardo’s cutting‑edge VR training technologies, including the Virtual Cockpit Procedural Trainer, ULTD, and Flight School platforms. These immersive simulators gave our learners a first‑hand look at how virtual environments are transforming pilot training and operational readiness, allowing for safer, more efficient skill development within aerospace and defence. The tour also included a deeper technical exploration of Leonardo’s Wildcat and Merlin helicopters. Students examined the mechanical systems, design processes and engineering challenges behind these sophisticated combat aircraft inside the training hall. They were also introduced to unmanned prototypes such as Proteus and Hero, offering an exciting glimpse into the future of autonomous and remotely piloted aviation.

Our pupils engaged enthusiastically in conversations about engineering pathways in the aerospace sector, asking insightful questions and exploring the breadth of opportunities available after completing a degree - from mechanical and avionics engineering to systems integration, software development and advanced manufacturing. One of our students Martha expressed particular interest in a potential future at Leonardo's once she completes her degree which was encouraged by the team.

Throughout the morning, our students represented Leweston brilliantly with curiosity, professionalism and engagement. Their enthusiasm was noted by the Leonardo engineers, who described the group as a pleasure to host. This opportunity was offered exclusively to Leweston due to stringent STEM entrance criteria, making the experience all the more special. We are extremely grateful to the Leonardo team for welcoming our pupils and hope to build on this relationship with further visits.

A huge thank you to Leonardo Helicopters for opening their doors and providing such an enriching and memorable STEM experience for our students!
