Leweston Prep Pupils Set Sail with Success in Poole

Thirty-six adventurous pupils from Leweston Prep 5 have taken to the waters of Poole Harbour this week as part of their RYA Stage 1 sailing courses at Rockley Watersports Centre. For many, it was their very first experience on the water — and what a week it was!

Over two days, the pupils embraced the challenges and thrills of sailing, learning essential boat handling techniques, sailing terminology, and weather theory. They trained across both Rockley locations, taking full advantage of the harbour’s shallow and sheltered waters to build their confidence and skills.

The weather added an extra layer of excitement to the course. Day one saw ideal conditions: blue skies and a brisk breeze — perfect for beginners to get a feel for sailing. However, day two brought a dramatic change, with stormy skies and high winds testing the resilience and enthusiasm of the young sailors. Despite these conditions, the pupils showed great determination and team spirit.

By the end of the course, every pupil had successfully passed their Stage 1 qualification — an incredible 100% pass rate and a testament to their hard work and focus.

With such a strong start to their sailing journeys, there’s every reason to believe that this group of young sailors will continue to develop their skills — both in and out of school.
