Leweston Celebrates National Poetry Day with ‘Think Big’

Leweston came alive with the spoken word this National Poetry Day, with a Year 7 Poetry Slam and a whole-school Poetry Assembly marking the occasion.

Year 7 Poetry Slam

Year 7 students were invited to compose their own poems, or to choose a favourite, on the theme of ‘Think Big’, and to perform them in a Slam as part of the day’s celebrations. There were plenty of enthusiastic participants, who presented their poems with thought, confidence and rhythm, and the range of work on show reflected the ambition of the theme.

Judging the Slam was a panel of Sixth Form students, who had great difficulty deciding on the prize winners. The results will be announced after half term.

Poetry Assembly

The celebrations continued with a Poetry Assembly, in which members of staff each read a selection of their favourite poems to the school. It was a chance for pupils to hear a variety of poetry read aloud and to find out what has inspired their teachers.

Congratulations and thanks go to everyone who took part, and especially to our Year 7 performers for their courage in taking the stage.
