The week began with the Modern Foreign Languages House Quiz, in which every Senior School student took part. Pupils tackled general knowledge questions and tried to identify songs in a range of languages, all in the hope of winning valuable points for their house. Meanwhile, the dining hall became part of the celebrations, with each day's lunch representing the nation of a language taught at Leweston or a nationality within our school community.
Special lessons brought cultural traditions to life. In Spanish, pupils made traditional fans, tried their hand at flamenco dancing and worked on Picasso-inspired projects. In French, they played pétanque and made traditional lavender bags. In German, pupils learned about the country's "Märchen", or fairy tales, and then rose to the Lego challenge, re-enactting their understanding of these truly "Grimm" stories.
The celebrations also had a spiritual dimension. Prayers were read by a native speaker during Mass, supporting the school's current focus on The Joy of Belonging and reminding us that a community is enriched by the many languages and cultures within it.
European Languages Week was a wonderful celebration of the diversity of our school community and the value of learning languages. Thank you to the MFL department and to everyone who helped make the week such a success.
