Hi, I’m Emma, 16 years old and took part in a Short Stay Programme at Leweston School. I’m from Germany and joined Year 12 (Sixth Form) for the second half of the summer term, a five-week experience that has been more exciting, inspiring and memorable than I ever imagined.
Before arriving at the beginning of June, I tried to prepare as much as I could. I read through the school website, looked up videos, and tried to picture what life at Leweston might be like. That’s why I’m happy to now share some insights for others who might be considering the same journey and whether it really feels like the “Hogwarts life” we’ve all dreamed of. (Spoiler: it kind of does.)
I looked at many different boarding schools, but Leweston stayed in my mind. The campus is beautiful and wide, there’s a swimming pool, a café, an equestrian centre and much more. But more than the buildings, it was the atmosphere that stood out. From the first emails I received, I could tell that this was a school with not only structure and ambition, but also kindness, humour and heart.
No matter how prepared you are, it’s normal to feel nervous, I definitely was. Everything is new and exciting, but also unfamiliar. Thankfully, from the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by the boarding staff with so much friendliness and care. They helped me carry my things, showed me around, and made sure I felt at home.
In the first few days, everything felt different. But even then, I was never alone. The other students helped me find my way, answered all my questions, and showed me how things work. Teachers and classmates were warm, open and supportive. One of my first highlights was realising how genuinely friendly everyone is, more than I’ve ever experienced before. That made it easy to settle in quickly and focus on all the new things I wanted to try.
Leweston’s campus is big, so don’t worry if you get lost (I did, a lot). But you’ll always find someone to help you, and before long, it all becomes familiar. One of the best things is how much is happening around you. You can join activities, meet your friends spontaneously, or simply explore the grounds.
One of my favourite memories is when some friends suddenly came into my room with cake and music, telling me to come outside. We ended up spending the afternoon in the sun, playing games, getting iced coffee from the café and just enjoying our time together. That feeling, being surrounded by people, laughing and making memories is something I’ll never forget.
Academically, I was surprised by how small and focused the classes are, often just 3 to 10 people. That makes it easier to get involved and feel seen. There are also so many different subjects to choose from, including Photography, Business, Design and PSHRE, which I found especially valuable. It teaches real-life skills that many schools don’t cover, and I think it’s a great part of the curriculum.
One thing I noticed is how many opportunities you have to get involved, for yourself, for the school, and for your future. Whether it’s clubs, competitions or just being part of a new culture, everything you do here helps you grow.
Leweston is a place where you can find your talents and work towards your dreams. And if I’ve learned one thing here, it’s that no dream is too far away, not when you’re surrounded by people who support you and believe in you. That’s why I chose Leweston, and I would choose it again every time.
Having the time of your life while learning and growing. That’s the best thing I could’ve dreamed of.
